Important Structure Missing From Off-The-Shelf Maps
It’s easy to show areas of lakes that are un-mapped and then demonstrate the power of a mapping software to add coverage. But what about those areas where existing map chips have coverage? Do we need programs like Insight Genesis to help us map lakes that already have a map? That depends on how important you think great maps with key fishing holding structures are.
We believe this is one of the most important keys to finding fish and making the most of your time on the water. Let’s take a look at an existing off-the-shelf map for Upper Cullen Lake in Minnesota:
B.A.S.S. Nation Challenge ‘a fantastic program,’ Tournament Director says; $150,000 in prizes up for grabs
Although a B.A.S.S. Nation Central Divisional champion has already been crowned, anglers in that tournament got a head start in another competition – this one with $150,000 worth of prizes up for grabs – the Insight Genesis B.A.S.S. Nation Challenge.
“The people in this room are the ones who really heard about it first, so if you do some mapping in the next two, three months, you’ve got a real shot at winning,” Lowrance’s Michael Kaste told a banquet hall full of B.A.S.S. Nation Central Divisional competitors.
Merge sonar logs from multiple trips for complete maps
To ensure quick uploads and prevent file corruption, makers of Insight Genesis custom lake maps can record several smaller sonar-log files while on the water, then merge those logs later into a master lake map. This is especially beneficial to Genesis users that prefer to make their fishing maps while actually fishing.
Find bottom-hardness transitions to find and catch fish
One key to consistently finding and catching big fish is locating hard- to soft-bottom transition zones on the lake bottom. “Because that’s where the food is,” says professional fisherman Scott Glorvigen, of wired2fish.com.
“Soft-bottom areas are home to invertabrates that make up the base of the food chain,” he explains.
To locate transitions from hard to soft bottoms, Glorvigen uses Insight Genesis, the online Lowrance service that creates custom lake maps from sonar signals recorded from the transducer on your boat.
