You won’t believe what this angler found when mapping a reservoir with Insight Genesis!
Savvy anglers already know to use Insight Genesis custom mapping to discover previously hidden fish-holding structure. But sometimes when mapping a lake, you find a lot more than you expected – like two stolen vehicles!
On Oct. 11, while hosting an Insight Genesis mapping party and fish-finder training seminar on Michigan’s Holloway Reservoir, Lowrance Pro-Staffer Lance Valentine saw something odd on his HDS Gen 2 Touch unit’s StructureScan display. Although it resided on the lake bottom, it did not look like a natural hump or rockpile – the type of fish-holding structure he was making a custom map of with Insight Genesis.
“I was definitely a truck,” Valentine recalls. “It was obvious on my StructureScan.” Later in the day, in a nearby area, he discovered a second “large target.” The first proved to be a stolen pick-up truck; the second was a Honda Civic.
After concluding the Insight Genesis mapping party, Valentine contacted Sergeant Dan Stemper of the Genesee County Sheriff Dive Team to report what he’d seen. A few days later, Sgt. Stemper, the Parks Director, Chief of Rangers Kevin Shanlian and several members of the county dive team met at the lake to remove the vehicles. “Using the StructureScan, it was extremely easy to relocate the vehicles, hook them up to a tow vehicle and remove them from the reservoir,” Valentine reports. “All in all, a pretty successful few days for Lowrance and StructureScan!”
Chief Shanlian agreed.
“Without the Lowrance Sonar, we would have never realized those vehicles had been intentionally sunken in our waters,” Shanlian wrote in a letter to Valentine. “We appreciate the time you took out of your work day to utilize your own personal boat and Lowrance Sonar to locate the stolen vehicles.”
Based on the Lowrance innovation of the world’s first and only true DownScan Imaging™ technology combined with side-scan imaging, StructureScan HD features three dedicated signals for best-in-class crisp, clear views to the left, right and directly beneath your boat. The full-panoramic, picture-like returns offer impressive with sharper images of structure, fish, thermoclines and more — like stolen trucks!
On the day he discovered the vehicles, Valentine, owner and operator of Walleye 101, had been on the water with four groups of anglers, conducting Lowrance training sessions, teaching how to interptet sonar, read StructureScan and how to make custom contour maps with Insight Genesis.
Lowrance + Insight Genesis = See More, Catch More!
Insight Genesis is the innovative, online service that empowers anglers to create custom lake maps from sonar data recorded with the Lowrance sonar unit on their own boats.* Making custom maps with Insight Genesis is not only easy, it’s in the best interest of individual anglers and the fishing community at large.
Anglers across the U.S. and Canada have been holding mapping parties like the one Valentine hosted on Holloway Reservoir. A dozen anglers all recording sonar logs can map a 1,000-acre lake in a little more than an hour. The combined results of all their sonar logs is then available as a full map via Insight Genesis Social Map, Lowrance’s online database of custom contour maps generated and shared by community-minded Lowrance users like Valentine.
One-foot contour lines on Insight Genesis maps are much more accurate than the estimated contour lines on many off-the-shelf, digital chip maps that not only miss, but often obscure, fish-holding structure of interest to anglers.
With Insight Genesis Social Map, you can quickly and effortlessly get detailed contour maps of thousands of water bodies, including those close to home, across the country, and around the globe. Built on a base layer of existing contour charts, Social Map refreshes itself in near real-time with current sonar data shared by the Insight Genesis community, revealing new fishing holes for anglers in never-before-seen detail.
To make your own custom contour maps and contribute them to the Social Map community, you don’t have to survey a lake all at once, driving back and forth and never wetting a line. You can simply record a sonar log every time you go fishing. Over time, your uploads of sonar data collected in multiple fishing trips will come together to form a master map, full of detailed, one-foot contour lines that identify fish-holding structure.
You can harness the power of Insight Genesis for yourself with a free account or a premium subscription. With either, you can create, use and save unlimited custom and social maps online; contribute sonar data; create, edit and store waypoints; manually adjust water-level offsets; and analyze weather trends.
Premium subscribers can load their custom maps and Social Map charts onto their compatible* Lowrance Elite HDI, HDS*, Simrad NS Series or B&G Zeus GPS or chartplotters for use on the water. As a Premium subscriber, you can also create unique bottom-hardness and vegetation-location maps, and can choose to mark your maps as private for personal use only. No matter which option you choose, your trails, waypoints and other personal data are always kept private.
