Lowrance pros have the Insight Genesis advantage in the Bassmaster Classic

It’s no surprise that 7 of the top 10 anglers contending today to win the Bassmaster Classic on Oklahoma’s Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees’ are Lowrance pros. They’ve all got a competitive advantage – Insight Genesis maps with one-foot contours and a bottom-hardness layer.

“That map is just a big-time, key factor in this Classic,” says 2014 Bassmaster Classic Champion Randy Howell, who launched this morning in eight place. “It’s so impressive. I’ve never had the detail nearly as good as this, with the one-foot contours along with the bottom-hardness layer.”

cropped-cropped-genesis-logo2.pngThe Insight Genesis bottom-hardness map layer shows the size and shape of hard-bottom areas like gravel patches, clay slicks and shellbeds, making such areas stick out like “Fish Here!” signs on your contour map. It overlays on top of your contour lines a color-coded representation of the size, shape and location of areas of different bottom hardness – dark orange shows the hardest bottom; a lighter orange indicates the next-hardest bottom; tan is the next-hardest bottom; and pale yellow shows the softest-bottom areas. “Once you know what type of bottom you’re looking for, you just eliminate a lot of water, » Howell explains. « That way, you’re a lot more efficient. Before, you’re casting all around and you’re hitting a lot of dead water. And now you can target more directly onto where the fish are – the most efficient zone, the strike zone. When you’ve got an 8-hour day, you’ve got to make as many casts in the right place as possible. And that’s what that map does for you. With the shaded colors for the hard, soft and middle, it’s just perfect for what we’re doing.”

Powered by GoFree, a Navico brand, Insight Genesis enables anglers to create custom contour maps of un-mapped bodies of water, improve contour detail on previously mapped waters, and precisely dissect spot-on-the-spot areas on fish-holding bottom structure. Insight Genesis maps are exclusive to Lowrance, Simrad and B&G GPS/sonar units.* (Article continues after image below)

shot052 Prior to the Classic’s no-information cut-off date, all Lowrance pros competing in the Classic were provided an Insight Genesis map of Grand Lake, complete with one-foot contours and a bottom-hardness layer (as pictured in the screenshot above).

“This time of year we’re looking for rock a lot, because rock warms up fastest in cold weather,” Howell says, underscoring the value of his bottom-hardness map. “So that map will show us everywhere there’s rock – all the hard-rock bottoms. There’s no guessing. I can bypass all those pockets that have the lighter color, which is a softer bottom, and go straight to those hard-bottom places, just with what the map is showing. And that map is so accurate.”

Having the Insight Genesis bottom-hardness map to study in the weeks leading up to the Classic gave Howell and the other Lowrance pros a distinct pre-fishing advantage as well.

shot053“You may be surprised at how much detail you may be missing out on” if you’re not pre-fishing with Insight Genesis maps, Howell says. By studying both the one-foot contour lines and bottom-hardness transitions areas revealed on his Insight Genesis map prior to the official Classic practice period, Howell was able to find and waypoint potential fish-holding sweet spots not visible on other maps.

“I looked around on the screen, just sitting in my garage – scrolling around, looking at stuff and hitting waypoints and marking it,” Howell explains. “And then I ran around on the lake and just went straight to those places. And everywhere that I marked is dead-on accurate – there’s rock everywhere that I marked rock.

“Some of the bites I am getting are on those key places I was able to find on that map before I ever put the boat in the water,” he says. “So you can’t beat the technology. It just makes it so easy on us in preparation, so it’s great.”

Whether your favorite fishery is a 450-acre pond or a 45,000-acre reservoir like Grand Lake, Insight Genesis mapping is a game-changer. The one-foot contour lines on Insight Genesis maps are much more accurate than the estimated contour lines on many chart chips and map apps.

“The one-foot contours are a big key,” Howell says. “Fish make very small, subtle moves this time of year – it might be from a seven- or eight-foot deep flat point onto a five- or four-foot-deep drop, just up on to the top of a flat, or just inside of a pocket that has a little drain/ditch coming out or coming into it, leading a little channel into it. … And in those places, one-foot increments are huge to us, because that one-foot difference in bottom depth on that contour makes a difference in where that school of fish can move to overnight.”

shot017Being able to see exactly where those subtle depth changes occur near bottom-hardness transitions allows Howell to better anticipate where the fish have moved to.

“You just keep following that track in with that map on those contours and you’ll see on the map where the points go out further, where the flats go out further, or where the lines go tight where it’s deeper,” he explains. “And that’s how you can put your pattern together.”

That makes Insight Genesis a huge time-saver for anglers — be they Bassmaster Classic Champs like Howell, or weekend warriors who fish for fun and braggin’ rights.

“You’ll be amazed by it,” Howell says. “I’m really excited about it and I guarantee you will be too. It’s going to save you a lot of time and help you find a lot of sweet spots that nobody else has ever found before. I guarantee it will lead you to the fish.”

The first step to getting the Insight Genesis advantage is registering for a FREE account. The same Grand Lake Insight Genesis map that was provided to Lowrance Pro Team members will be made available for FREE to anyone who visits the Lowrance booth at the Bassmaster Classic Expo and signs up for an Insight Genesis account.

“You can have everything we have in this Bassmaster Classic,” Howell says.
