Pro tip: Map all the spots you graph in tournament practice
When you graph potential hot spots in practice for a fishing tournament, you should also map them and waypoint every fish you catch and/or shake-off. Overlaying your waypoints on the Insight Genesis bottom-hardness and vegetation layers will help clue you in on a productive pattern and allow you to run that pattern faster and more precisely.
Insight Genesis is GoFree’s innovative software service that anglers use to make custom one-foot contour maps of un-mapped bodies of water, improve contour detail on previously mapped waters, and to find fish-holding bottom structure not charted on off-the shelf maps, including reefs and shoals, sunken islands and holes, humps and hard-bottom areas, drains and ditches. GoFree, Navico’s newest brand, offers digital marine maps, including Insight Genesis, Lake Insight HD, Lake Insight Pro and others.
How to create and use an Insight Genesis bottom-hardness map layer to catch more and bigger fish
Many fisherman “beat the bank” because they have more confidence targeting visible cover. But the fish in those areas get pounded, making them harder to catch. With an Insight Genesis bottom-hardness map, however, you can fish the bottom as confidently as you do the bank, targeting offshore structure like hard-to-soft-bottom transitions and the fish-holding sweet spots on humps, reefs, and shoals, etc. This article will teach you how.
Although it’s a great fish-finding tool, StructureScan alone can’t really show you the size and shape of hard-bottom areas like gravel patches, clay slicks and shellbeds. But the Insight Genesis bottom-hardness layer can, making such areas stick out like “Fish Here!” signs on your map. It overlays onto your contour lines a color-coded representation* of the size, shape and location of areas of different bottom hardness: dark orange areas show the hardest bottom; a lighter orange indicates the next-hardest bottom; tan is the next-hardest bottom; and pale yellow shows the softest-bottom areas.
Insight Genesis mapping helps college anglers win big on Hartwell
Not all brush piles are created equal, says FLW College Fishing Southeastern Conference tournament champion Isaac Nesbitt. Neither are the humps and points they’re sunk on. By mapping those areas with Insight Genesis, he discovered subtle sweet spots that produced the winning fish for him and his Clemson University teammate Ross Burns May 30th on Georgia’s Lake Hartwell.
“One of those places we mapped in practice with Insight Genesis put three extra fish in the boat — one of them our biggest of the day,” says Nesbitt, whose win on Hartwell earned him and his teammate the first Map & Win! contingency prize awarded in Lowrance’s Insight Genesis College Cup program.
Insight Genesis bottom-hardness, vegetation, map layers help Skeet, Edwin, find fish fast
In the videos below, Skeet Reese and Edwin Evers show off the game-changing Insight Genesis bottom-hardness and vegetation map layers. These innovative fish-finding tools, Skeeet says, are « totally different than anything we’ve seen before. »
With its bottom-hardness and vegetation map layers, Insight Genesis is « giving us a lot more tools to break down a lake » faster, Skeet says. “It’s pretty cool, » he says. « Insight Genesis is allowing us to be a lot more efficient on the water. »
« It’s going to be so helpful today, to be able to break this lake down in a hurry, » he says. « It’s going to be a big, big, huge help. I think it’s going to be a big factor today. … It will really help me formulate a game plan. »
Skeet and Edwin’s observations came prior to launching on Louisiana’s Cross Lake in the second sudden-death round of Major League Fishing’s 2015 Shell Rotella Challenge Cup. All boats in MLF competition are outfitted with Lowrance HDS Gen2 GPS/sonar units loaded with Insight Genesis or Lake Insight HD contour maps. Lake Insight and Insight Genesis maps are exclusive to Lowrance, Simrad and B&G sonar/GPS units.
