How to record Insight Genesis sonar logs with a Lowrance sonar/GPS unit
After hearing anglers everywhere — including 2013 Bassmaster Classic Champion Randy Howell — talking about how much easier it is to find and catch fish using Insight Genesis custom contour maps, you’re likely asking yourself “How do I get in on this?”
The first step to creating your own custom Insight Genesis contour maps is to record sonar logs created with the soundings from the transducer on your own boat. This article provides easy-to-follow, step-by-step directions to do that with compatible* Lowrance sonar/GPS units.
Repeat the process detailed below every hour to 90 minutes on the water. Genesis servers can more quickly process 6 one-hour files than one 6-hour file.
How to create custom-colored depth ranges on Insight Genesis maps
At a glance, Premium Insight Genesis subscribers can now more quickly identify dangerously shallow areas, more efficiently troll the most productive portions of the water column, and more easily find fish-holding high spots surrounded by deeper water.
All that and more is now possible thanks to a new feature that allows Premium subscribers to select and set custom color palettes to highlight multiple depth ranges on the Insight Genesis maps they use on their compatible Lowrance HDS and Simrad sonar/GPS units.*
It’s said that at any given time, 90% of the fish are in 10% of the lake — with this new feature, you’ll be able to easily highlight that fish-holding 10% on your map and catch more and bigger fish.
- Pro Tip: Synch your HDS unit with Motorguide’s new xi5 Pinpoint Lowrance Gateway, and you can easily set your trolling motor to autopilot your boat to follow your custom-color-shaded depth contours!
Pro tip: Map all the spots you graph in tournament practice
When you graph potential hot spots in practice for a fishing tournament, you should also map them and waypoint every fish you catch and/or shake-off. Overlaying your waypoints on the Insight Genesis bottom-hardness and vegetation layers will help clue you in on a productive pattern and allow you to run that pattern faster and more precisely.
Insight Genesis is GoFree’s innovative software service that anglers use to make custom one-foot contour maps of un-mapped bodies of water, improve contour detail on previously mapped waters, and to find fish-holding bottom structure not charted on off-the shelf maps, including reefs and shoals, sunken islands and holes, humps and hard-bottom areas, drains and ditches. GoFree, Navico’s newest brand, offers digital marine maps, including Insight Genesis, Lake Insight HD, Lake Insight Pro and others.
How to create and use an Insight Genesis bottom-hardness map layer to catch more and bigger fish
Many fisherman “beat the bank” because they have more confidence targeting visible cover. But the fish in those areas get pounded, making them harder to catch. With an Insight Genesis bottom-hardness map, however, you can fish the bottom as confidently as you do the bank, targeting offshore structure like hard-to-soft-bottom transitions and the fish-holding sweet spots on humps, reefs, and shoals, etc. This article will teach you how.
Although it’s a great fish-finding tool, StructureScan alone can’t really show you the size and shape of hard-bottom areas like gravel patches, clay slicks and shellbeds. But the Insight Genesis bottom-hardness layer can, making such areas stick out like “Fish Here!” signs on your map. It overlays onto your contour lines a color-coded representation* of the size, shape and location of areas of different bottom hardness: dark orange areas show the hardest bottom; a lighter orange indicates the next-hardest bottom; tan is the next-hardest bottom; and pale yellow shows the softest-bottom areas.
