Insight Genesis pioneers just goin' fishing to map the future
To look at the Insight Genesis Social Map chart of Crawling Valley Reservoir, a 6,000-plus-acre impoundment west of Calgary, Alberta, you’d think a fleet of survey boats must have covered all that water, unlocking the secrets of so much bottom structure.
Actually, it was just three guys – three Canadian fishermen, who, between them, logged sonar data on almost 100 separate fishing trips on the sprawling reservoir, which is known for numerous hazardous, shallow, rocky areas (good areas to be shown on maps!).
“It’s pretty admirable what these three fishermen have done,” says Navico’s Matt Johnson, who showed off the amazing detail of Insight Genesis Social Map’s Crawling Valley Reservoir chart at several recent presentations at The Fishin’ Hole stores in Alberta.
“The existing lake maps in Canada are terrible – non-existent practically, so these anglers are really pioneers,” Johnson says. “They’re leading the way, and others will follow. I don’t doubt this reservoir will be completely mapped soon. Just by going fishing, these anglers are improving the future of Canadian fishing. And not just for themselves, but for countless others in the Lowrance community that use Insight Genesis Social Map.”
Insight Genesis is an innovative service that empowers you to make custom contour charts of un-mapped, or poorly mapped, bodies of water, using sonar data recorded with the Lowrance fish-finder already on your boat – you need not buy additional hardware. Your custom Genesis contour maps will be much more detailed and accurate than many of the digital charts that come on off-the-shelf map chips.
Insight Genesis Social Map is an online database of custom contour maps generated and shared by the Lowrance community of anglers. With Social Map, you can quickly and effortlessly get detailed contour maps of thousands of water bodies, including those close to home, across the country, and around the globe. Built on a base layer of existing contour charts, Social Map refreshes itself in near real-time with current sonar data shared by the Insight Genesis community, revealing new fishing holes for anglers in never-before-seen detail.
“Someone has to take the first plunge, but we’re seeing many fishermen follow suit as soon as our Genesis pioneers upload the first public data to a lake, like Crawling Valley Reservoir,” Johnson says. “And the next wave of anglers that fish Crawling Valley will, in turn, contribute their sonar data to fine-tune the Social Map chart.”
To make your custom contour map, you don’t have to survey a lake all at once, driving back and forth and never wetting a line. Instead, you can simply record a sonar log every time you go fishing. Over time, your uploads of sonar data collected in multiple fishing trips will come together to form a master map, full of detailed, one-foot contour lines that identify fish-holding structure you might never have found, had you not driven over them while recording a sonar log.
“All you’ve got to do to get that data, to locate that fish-holding structure, to improve the Social Map for everyone, is go fishing,” Johnson says.
Along with finding previously undiscovered fishing hot spots, Canadian anglers have additional motivation for mapping their lakes with Insight Genesis – a chance to win $200 in Fishin’ Hole Bucks and a grand prize of an all-inclusive trip to fish in British Columbia at Dave Murphy’s Sportfish Lodge.
